Day & Zimmermann Honored With Nuclear Project of the Year Award for Work on DC Cook Bridge Crane Installation

PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwired - Dec 16, 2015) - Day & Zimmermann (D&Z), the century-old, family-owned provider of construction and engineering, staffing and defense solutions for leading corporations and governments around the world, announced today it received the Nuclear Power Project of the Year award from Power Engineering and Nuclear Power International Magazine. Day & Zimmermann was recognized along with AEP for helping to install a bridge crane using a first-of-its-kind process in the nuclear industry at the DC Cook Nuclear plant in Bridgman, Michigan. By installing the equipment while the plant was still operating D&Z helped AEP save millions of dollars and a great deal of time in advance of an upcoming refueling outage.

"We are very proud of the innovative work we did with AEP on this unique project," said Walt Sanders, President of Day & Zimmermann NPS. "In addition to saving the customer millions of dollars, we executed this project without any human performance or safety issues."

Day & Zimmermann received the award for its support of AEP throughout the lifecycle of the project. To execute the project, D&Z used multiple telescoping gantry systems and a hydraulic turntable to safely lift and rotate components for a 250-ton bridge crane. Two 88-foot girders were lifted 60 feet above the turbine floor and placed between the two operating units.

Workers configured the gantry system as an engineered temporary lift assembly, something that had never been done previously during power operation. The temporary design was less invasive to the plant structure and operations. Thanks to the project, the industry now has a proven method for the practical application of a telescoping gantry system and a turntable for component rotation.

The innovative installation saved $18 million that would have been absorbed into the community rate base. It also cut the retrofit outage by a week, which helped to keep power costs and power bills down.
