Large U.S. chemical production plant chooses D&Z to convert industrial boilers

Scope of Services

With critical schedule constraints to convert their coal-fired industrial boilers to meet EPA guidelines, our client selected Day & Zimmermann as its contractor – continuing a 30-year relationship at their North American sites. D&Z leveraged its extensive capabilities and experience in utility boiler projects to provide engineering, procurement, and construction for the conversion of two existing 220,000lbs/hr at 900 psi superheated coal-fired industrial boilers to operate on natural gas No.2 fuel oil.

The project included extensive demolition and removal of existing equipment, as well as the shutdown of an operating boiler.  New air quality control equipment including an SCR, economizer, and ammonia injection grid were installed.

Accomplishments and Innovations

D&Z brought extensive experience in utility boiler projects to support our client’s compliance with EPA regulations. Due to proper planning, knowledge and relationships with boiler equipment vendors, as well as our knowledge of the client and site, D&Z safely shaved 4 days off a critically tight schedule which resulted in a significant cost savings for the client. Our demonstrated value to the client resulted in similar projects at 4 other US locations. Additionally, work was performed with zero OSHA or human performance issues.
