DZMC’s Future Starts Now: Leadership, Accountability, and EPC Excellence

The world is changing, and so must we. How our customers operate is changing, their needs are changing, and their expectations of Day & Zimmermann Maintenance and Construction (DZMC) are changing right alongside. And so, we’re evolving from the industry’s most trusted maintenance partner into a full-service engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) provider — continuing to deliver the certainty our customers count on.

It’s the right plan, with the right people, at the right time to match the pace of change.

For 120 years, our north star has been simple: We do what we say®. That promise of accountability built our reputation and still sets us apart as a privately held, family-run company answering only to our customers. Now that promise of accountability is guiding our transformation.

For many people, “accountability” sounds like a lecture. It’s viewed as a negative. But as my colleague and friend retired Brigadier General John J. McGuiness, President of D&Z’s Munitions & Government division, recently wrote, accountability should be celebrated because it’s about growth, not blame.

I see accountability and leadership as two sides of the same coin. When we own our commitments — whether they’re hard internal efforts like transforming an organization’s operational structure from the inside out, or complex projects for our customers like building a gas plant or delivering a first-of-a-kind technology such as a small modular reactor — we invite open, solution-focused feedback, we fail fast and learn faster, and we continuously improve and steadily progress. Driving accountability is grounded in leadership, and I expect that leadership from everyone at DZMC. My job in steering this organizational change is to empower all our people with agency to lead.

In their book The Power of Agency, authors Fred Miller and Judith Katz describe agency as ensuring “all people, of all roles, levels, tenures, and identities have the power, influence, and voice to make choices and decisions related to their jobs and the betterment of the organization.” That’s the kind of culture we’re building.

It’s a culture that thrives and shares that success with its customers. It’s a culture where everyone is trusted with the power, influence, and voice to not only shape their company and our future together, but also to spark innovation to help bring our customers’ big ideas to life. Leadership and accountability turn individual strength into unstoppable team momentum. It’s what is putting our EPC vision in motion and what gives us solid ground to truly partner with customers to bring complex, high-risk projects to completion, safely and cost efficiently.

Despite all the change, DZMC has been trusted for decades in mission-critical environments, and the decades ahead will be no different. Whether it’s advanced nuclear technology or data centers, utility scale solar or facility upgrades, the same leadership and accountability are non-negotiable in achieving first-time quality at every phase of any construction project.

At DZMC, our strategic vision is in motion, and we need every voice, every day to keep it on track. Step up and lead. Hold yourself — and me — accountable. Bring the truth, the fresh idea, the better way forward. Together we’ll keep the promises we’ve made to ourselves, earn new trust, and build a future where customers turn to DZMC first for their EPC needs because they know We do what we say.® Leadership and accountability are how we work — and how we all win.
