Day & Zimmermann, including Mason & Hanger and SOC together have proudly served the Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE Mission for 75 years.
Since 1947, we have provided an array of architectural, engineering, and security services—from the design of nuclear weapon manufacturing plants in the 1950's, to the ongoing protection of present-day facilities.
With our strong history supporting the Department of Energy (DOE), we have provided mission-critical services to protect national security assets that include Category I Special Nuclear Material in research, development, and manufacturing environments.
A few noteworthy moments in the history of DOE include:
First AEC Production Plant - We began our 75 years of service to the Department of Energy by operating the Atomic Energy Commission’s (AEC) Burlington Plant in Iowa, starting in 1947. This was the AEC’s first production plant for high explosive components for nuclear weapons.
Pantex Plant Design - That same year in 1947, Mason & Hanger designed the Pantex Plant.
45 Years, Pantex Management & Operations - For more than four decades [45 years], from 1956 to 2001, Mason & Hanger provided Management & Operations (M&O) services at the mission-critical Pantex plant.
Nevada Test Site (present-day Nevada National Security Site, NNSS) - In 1947, Mason & Hanger started working at the plant and design for the Nevada Nuclear Weapons Test Site began. Through 1956, Mason & Hanger served as A/E for AEC’s Nevada Test Site for nuclear weapons, developing some of the nation’s leading technologies for designing structures to resist dynamic loading. The structures include 300’ and 500' detonation towers and Gravel Gerties.
Safeguards, Security, Emergency Services, O&M to protect U.S. National Security- Currently, SOC fills a critical role in protecting the research and development that supports the nation’s nuclear deterrent and other important national security missions. We deliver award-winning security and emergency services operations solutions for more than five U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sites, providing protection of personnel, equipment, facilities, and assets around the clock. DOE operations supported include: The Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), Pantex Plant, Y-12 National Security Complex, and other major national laboratories.
