Day & Zimmermann Receives Safety Award From Southeastern Utility Company

PHILADELPHIA, PA-- Day & Zimmermann (D&Z), the century-old, family-owned provider of construction and engineering, staffing and defense solutions for leading corporations and governments around the world, announced today that its Engineering, Construction and Maintenance (ECM) group, has been awarded the prestigious Marsh and TVA Maynard Spence Safety Award for the fourth consecutive year. This honor is presented annually by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to contract partners that demonstrate exceptional safety performance.

Day & Zimmermann received the award for its safety performance at TVA's Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant. In 2014, D&Z worked more than 983,000 safe work hours at Browns Ferry and completed a major refueling outage on schedule and budget. The company was commended for its contributions to improved safety, productivity, and regulatory compliance at the site over the past three years.

"This award is especially important to us because safety is our company's number one value," said Walter M. Sanders IV, President of Day & Zimmermann NPS®. "We look forward to continuing to drive safety excellence at TVA and at all of the plants we work on."

The company was honored for its safety performance at two other TVA nuclear plants: Sequoyah in 2013, Watts Bar in 2012, and for its work on TVA fossil plants in 2011.

The award is named for Maynard "Hedgehog" Spence, an employee of Marsh & McLennan Companies who served as a Loss Control Consultant to TVA's owner-controlled insurance program. He dedicated his career to jobsite safety on construction projects. Maynard was killed September 11, 2001, in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. This award was created to honor his memory.
