Convoy Live Fire Range
Fort Hunter-Liggett, CA

Business Challenge
Fort Hunter-Liggett provides a master range complex supporting scenario driven combat support, combat service support, and Combat Maneuver Training to support units in the Army Force Generation Training Cycle. There is a modified Live Fire Convoy training range at Fort Hunter-Liggett, but it lacks the minimum number of objective stations to fully deploy convoy training skills and to support current known threat reaction training. Increased training requirements generated from lessons learned from current deployed units dictate an increase in live fire shooting training events. The number of Reserve and National Guard units requiring training was also driving the need for live fire training facilities. This project updated and replaced portions of the existing Convoy Live Fire Range to bring it up to date with current training requirements.

The Live Fire Convoy training range provides the leader with a range to train and evaluate the unit during a convoy live fire exercise. Units are trained and evaluated on their ability to move tactically, engage targets, react to and spot/identify improvised explosive devices, and practice target discrimination.

Our design provides for a Convoy Live Fire (CLF) Range in an existing impact area located within Training Area 20 at Fort Hunter Liggett. The Convoy Live Fire Range contains seven objectives and each objective is meant to simulate a specific scenario that a convoy could encounter while traveling to and from the battlefield. The new CLF is being constructed around an existing "make-shift" Convoy Live Fire Range. The new construction will act as an enhancement to the existing range, by leaving the existing target emplacements and training capability in place. The current layout has been modeled after a conceptual layout provided by users. This layout was followed as closely as possible, but deviations were made in cases where the terrain did not support the proposed construction.

Objective 1 – Entry Control Point

The Entry Control Point is the most involved objective and contains:

    • 7 Reconfigurable Stationary Infantry Target (SIT) emplacements
    • Serpentine moving target
    • Bunkers

Objective 2 – React to Sniper

    • 2 Two-story facades
    • 2 Single-story facades

Objective 3 – React to Ambush (unblocked)

The React to Ambush (unblocked) is located directly south of Objective 2 and contains:

    • Moving Infantry Target (MIT)
    • Moving Armor Target (MAT)
    • Stationary Amor Target (SAT)
    • 7 Reconfigurable Stationary Infantry Targets (SIT)

Objective 4 – React to Technical Vehicles

    • Stationary Armor Target (SAT)
    • Moving Armor Target (MAT)

Objective 5 – React to Ambush (blocked)

    • Stationary Armor Target (SAT)
    • Moving Infantry Target (MIT)
    • Moving Armor Target (MAT)
    • 7 Stationary Infantry Targets (SIT)
    • Battle Effects Simulator (BES)

Objective 6 – React to RPG Team

    • Stationary Armor Target (SAT)
    • Stationary Infantry Target (SIT)

Objective 7 – React to Ambush (urban environment)

    • 2 Single-story facades
    • 2 Two-story facades
    • Moving Infantry Target (MIT)
    • Stationary Armor Target (SAT)
